about us
Who We Are
The Oakwood Montessori School was established in October 2006 in Surulere. It was located at 22 Bode Thomas street, Surulere, Lagos. It started with 10 children and now has grown to over 200 children.
It offers education for children aged 3 months to 12 years.
In Montessori Education, the environment is the key. All the classes are equipped to a very high standard to embrace full Montessori education, British and Nigerian curriculum. All the classes are stimulating and comfortable.
The school is managed by a Board of Governors which takes all major decisions. As the school continues to grow, there are plans to maintain and improve upon the existing facilities as well as acquire additional ones to meet the increasing standards. We are prepared for educational challenges of the 21st century.
The Oakwood Montessori School, located in Surulere, is dedicated to providing an enriching and challenging educational environment where each child is encouraged to grow to his or her full potential academically, emotionally, spiritually and socially.
Through the dynamic partnership of child, parent and School, a consistent Montessori framework for learning is developed offering an “education for life”. We foster independence, critical thinking, self-discipline, cooperation, love of learning, respect and responsibility to self, parents and society.
Our School
The pre-school caters to children from ages 3 months to 5 years. Children are encouraged to explore, discover and gain understanding through structured play and learning activities There are five classrooms each with mixed age groups. Each has a directress, two class assistants and a nanny for toddlers.
Our teaching curriculum is based on five Montessori subject areas: language, Mathematics, sensorial, practical life exercise and cultural. Our children follow these Montessori teaching curricula starting with the practical life exercise designed to develop physical control, coordination and concentration skills,
moving through the Montessori sensorial materials which teach shapes, colours dimensions, and relative sizes. They are moved into materials that develop their ability to speak, listen, read write and number work.
Reading is taught phonetically (using jolly phonics) and many of our children are reading simple books and doing addition, and simple subtraction by the time they move into the Elementary school. We also expose them to subjects like music, French and computer. We also help them to explore and investigate through themes and country of focus
